Project AAROGYYA: How Health ATMs Are Strengthening Rural Primary Healthcare
In the first blog of this series, we looked at the hidden cost families pay when a health problem is found late. In the second, we explained what it takes on the ground to run rural digital healthcare. This final blog shows what that looks like in practice. It is the story of Project AAROGYYA, and of how a Health ATM placed inside a government health facility can make the first step of healthcare faster, easier and closer to home. Today, 125 Health ATMs across 21 states are doing exactly that.
The Gap Project AAROGYYA Addresses
For most rural families, the Primary Health Centre (PHC) or Community Health Centre (CHC) is the first point of contact with the health system. When that first point cannot offer basic screening, people travel far for a simple test, lose a day’s wages and often put off going at all. By the time the problem is found, it can be late and costly.
Project AAROGYYA was created to close this gap. The idea is straightforward: strengthen the government health facility that people already know and trust, and give it the tools to do early screening on the spot.
What Is Project AAROGYYA?
Project AAROGYYA is an initiative of Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India). Under the project, we install Health ATM machines in government PHCs and CHCs, with the support of CSR partners, in rural and underserved areas across India.
The goal is to improve the accessibility, efficiency and quality of primary healthcare in rural and underserved regions through technology-enabled diagnostics and digital healthcare. Its objectives are simple and clear:
- Improve healthcare access in rural and underserved regions
- Enable early detection and prevention of complications
- Increase health awareness among communities
- Reduce healthcare costs by cutting patient travel and diagnostic expenses

What Is a Health ATM?
A Health ATM is a screening kiosk that checks a wide range of health parameters in one visit. It is designed to cover more than 45 parameters in about 10 to 15 minutes, with reports available instantly by WhatsApp, SMS, email or printout. The machines are FDA and CE certified, need very little space, can work with minimal human intervention and can continue to operate offline for three to four days. They are also designed to work with the ABHA and ABDM digital health system.
The screening covers:
- Vitals: blood pressure and pulse, oxygen saturation, body temperature, height
- Heart: 6-lead and 12-lead ECG
- Bloodtests: random blood sugar, HbA1c, haemoglobin (for anaemia) and a lipid profile covering total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides and the LDL to HDL ratio
- Urinerapid test: ten parameters including glucose, protein, ketones and leukocytes, and a blood grouping rapid test
- Bodycomposition: body weight, BMI, body fat, visceral fat, muscle mass, bone mass, metabolic age and more
- Senses: vision tests, including colour blindness, and a software-based hearing test
- Mental health: screening for depression and anxiety
- Diet plan: a personalised dietary and lifestyle suggestion based on the results
The person registers using a mobile number, date of birth, gender or health ID. A trained operator guides the screening, and the report is ready in moments.
Where Project AAROGYYA Is Working
Project AAROGYYA now runs 125 Health ATMs across 21 states and 30 rural districts. Locations from the earlier phases of installation include:
- Bathinda, Punjab: 4
- Jaisalmer (BSF), Rajasthan: 7
- Balotra, Rajasthan: 4
- Banaskantha, Gujarat: 6
- Vadodara, Gujarat: 17
- North Goa, Goa: 2
- Shravasti, Uttar Pradesh: 3
- Leh, Ladakh: 2
- Gangtok, Sikkim: 3
- Nagaon, Assam: 4
- West Tripura, Tripura: 3
- Lunglei, Mizoram: 2
More recently, with the support of IDBI Bank’s CSR initiative, 12 Health ATMs have been installed at CHC and PHC level in Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh. The project began in 2026 and was inaugurated in September 2026.
The Care Pathway: From Screening to Follow-Up
Project AAROGYYA is not just a machine in a room. It is a pathway that begins with a community and ends with follow-up.
- Approvaland need assessment: the CMO’s recommendation and a baseline survey of the community and facility.
- Siteselection and installation: CHCs and PHCs are chosen based on need, and the Health ATM is installed and tested.
- Staff training: facility staff are trained to assist
- Communitymobilisation: villagers are made aware, and their questions and fears are
- Guided screening: the person registers and is screened in 10 to 15
- Instantreport and guidance: the person receives a digital or printed report and lifestyle and diet
- Referraland follow-up: people at risk are directed to the right level of care and tracked to confirm they received treatment.
A Day at a Health ATM Site
A typical screening day starts well before the first patient arrives. The Health ATM has been installed and tested, and the staff have been trained. Our ground team then goes through the surrounding villages, speaking with people, explaining what the machine is and inviting them to come for a screening.
When people arrive, they register and are guided step by step through the tests. Many have never been screened before. Some are nervous about the machine. Our team and the facility staff explain each step, show how the reading is taken and help people understand their reports. Those who need further care are directed to the appropriate doctor or facility.
By the end of the day, a health centre that once could offer only basic services has given dozens of people a full screening, without any of them needing to travel to a district hospital.
Results and Evidence: Impact of Health ATMs in Rural India
Across 21 states and 30 rural districts, 125 Health ATMs now bring primary healthcare screening to people who once had to travel far for basic tests.
- Betterskilled health staff: 1,000 medical staff have upgraded their skills in medical field-related areas, so facilities can run screenings on their own.
- Timesaved: thousands of hours have been saved on the first primary screening, for patients and for doctors.
- Moneysaved: with no long trips to district hospitals, families spend less on travel and lose fewer days of wages.
- Widereach: approximately 10 lakh beneficiaries have been helped so far, saving time and money after their first screening.
The project and its work have also been covered by several media outlets. Because our team reports to partners daily and tracks patient details, we can look beyond the number of people screened. We follow the full path: how many facilities are covered, how many people are reached, how many are screened, how many are referred and how many receive follow-up. Referral treatment is the responsibility of the CHC and PHC, and our team stays in touch with patients along the way.
How AAROGYYA Strengthens Primary Health Centres
The aim of the project is to make the government PHC and CHC a stronger first point of contact. The expected benefits are:
- Betteraccess: essential diagnostic services are available at the facility, and more patients come
- Early detection: health risks are found before complications
- Lesshospital load: non-urgent cases are filtered, and serious cases are directed to the right care
- Quicker decisions: doctors have instant reports to guide
- Lowercosts for families: less travel, fewer lost wages and lower expenses through early
- Greatertrust: people see the public health system offering useful, modern services close to

For companies looking for a CSR healthcare project with measurable results, Health ATM installation in government PHCs and CHCs offers a clear model: transparent reporting, community mobilisation and patient follow-up. MVS India, as a CSR partner NGO based in Jaipur, manages every step from survey to maintenance.
Built to Last: Sustainability
A machine is only useful if it keeps working and keeps being used. MVS and its partner respond quickly to any problem with the equipment, and each Health ATM is supported through an annual maintenance contract funded under the CSR project. We have also discussed with the facility teams how the machines will continue to be used and cared for after the CSR-funded maintenance period ends, so that the facility takes ownership of the service over time.
Lessons from the Field
Three lessons have shaped how we work:
- Dataneeds a system from day Accurate records only happen when reporting is regular and checked every day.
- Trusthas to be earned in Myths about cost or safety do not disappear through posters alone. They fade when people see their neighbours complete a screening comfortably.
- Training builds confidence. Staff who understand the machine use it, explain it and protect
Behind all three is the vision that keeps our team going: to make a person’s first health screening better, earlier and easier to reach.

Conclusion
Project AAROGYYA began with a simple observation: families lose too much, in money, time and health, when the first check-up is far away. By placing Health ATMs in government health facilities and surrounding them with community work, training and follow-up, we are trying to make that first check-up routine, early and close to home.
The journey is still growing. Today, 125 Health ATMs across 21 states are making the first health check-up routine, early and close to home. Every new facility is a new chance to catch a problem before it becomes a crisis.
When the first health check is close to home, healthier communities follow.
