Solar Street Light Installation in Villages

Indian villages are slowly developing to provide their residents a good quality of life and also contribute to the country’s economic growth. While you can already notice plenty of improvements across numerous Indian villages, there’s still one persistent challenge preventing them from developing fully – inconsistent electricity supply and streets drenched in darkness after evening hours.

Since many semi-urban and rural regions experience inconsistent electricity supply, we at Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India), an ISO 9001:2015-certified NGO in Rajasthan, decided to address the problem by installing solar street lights. We believe it’s the most sustainable way to not only illuminate village street lights but also improve safety, mobility, and economic activity.

In this blog post today, we’ve covered more about the problems villages face with inadequate lighting and how our solar street light installation initiative is aiming to resolve those issues. So, ensure you read till the end.

Challenges Villages Face Without Proper Street Lighting

In many villages, the evening hours automatically translate into non-working hours because the area goes into darkness due to an insufficient and inconsistent light supply. Poorly lit roads and internal pathways often become difficult to use after sunset.

If some village roads have uneven surfaces, potholes, open drains, or isolated routes, villagers may struggle to see them clearly, increasing the chances of accidents. It can also make movement within the village more inconvenient for everyone, especially women, children, and the elderly.

People usually hesitate to travel through dark areas, particularly around isolated roads and village outskirts. The impact can be noticed far beyond mobility. Village life usually continues into the evening through small shops, local markets, social interactions, and community activities. But insufficient lighting can halt all of them.

The only viable solution to address all these problems simultaneously is to install solar street lights in villages. The next section explains why it’s the best solution.

Benefits of Solar Street Installation Beyond Illumination

While the most visible, immediate benefit of installing solar street lights is illumination, there’s more to it. After installing solar street lights in multiple Indian villages, we’ve noticed the following benefits that villagers directly experienced –

  • Improved Safety & Better Mobility

Owing to our solar street light installation initiative, villages now have well-lit roads and pathways. It has made travel during sunset hours easier and more comfortable for residents.

We particularly installed solar street lights at key priority locations, such as main roads, school routes, markets, and healthcare centres in villages, so that the villagers can freely move through these routes, even after sunset. It has also increased their sense of safety.

  • Ease of Doing Business

Village communities usually depend on small-scale businesses and local interactions to maintain their livelihood and social life. You can find plenty of tea stalls, grocery shops, local vendors, and other small marketplaces that continue to operate throughout the day.

Previously, they were forced to shut operations after sunset as the roads would be engulfed in darkness. However, with our solar street light installations, they can freely continue their work for as long as they want. It has significantly strengthened the villages’ economic conditions.

  • Reduced Dependence on Conventional Electricity

The best part about solar street lights is that they are capable of generating electricity on their own using solar energy. This means these street lights do not depend on grid power for operation, and hence, can provide lighting even during power outages. It has particularly benefited areas where extending electrical infrastructure may require significant investment or where power reliability remains a serious concern.

MVS India’s Initiative to Power Rural Lives Through Clean Energy

At Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India), one of the top 10 NGOs in Jaipur, we wanted to improve the quality of life of marginalised and low-income communities living in villages. Since many villages face the common problem of poorly lit roads after sunset, we launched a dedicated project to power education and rural life in these areas with clean energy. As a part of this project, we –

  • Installed 10kW off-grid solar power systems in government schools
  • Installed solar street lights in priority locations across villages
  • Distributed LED bulbs to families for cost-efficient lighting

We noticed that darkness after sunset was one of the core concerns in rural areas. Hence, our team installed standalone solar street lights that can work right from dusk to dawn. These posts use high-efficiency LED luminaries with battery backup, so that villagers can continue enjoying uninterrupted lighting without relying on the traditional power grid.

However, our work didn’t stop at installing solar street lights. We knew maintaining these installations was the main challenge. Hence, we involved the local community for continuous monitoring and protection of these assets. Over time, our solar street light installations in villages have also helped to significantly reduce crime and accident risks, improving safety for everyone.

Impacting 6,000+ Lives Through Our Solar Street Light Installation Initiative

At Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India), we have collaborated with numerous top organisations to design their CSR projects for maximum social benefits. One of our recent collaborations was with Apraava Energy. Together, we installed solar street lights and distributed LED bulbs across Rangpur, Digod, Dobra, and Dobri villages of Kota district in Rajasthan.

This initiative has benefitted over 6,000 people by improving their safety and road accessibility after sunset. We even distributed LED bulbs to 10,000 households for a cost-effective lighting solution. It alone has benefited over 20,000 villagers by improving lighting inside their homes while reducing their electricity bills.

After we finished the project, many villagers, including the panchayat representatives, sarpanch, and village committees, expressed their gratitude. They were all confident that this installation would make their daily life much easier. Besides improving safety and movement, it will also help their kids study at night.

Conclusion

A village cannot grow if it goes under darkness once the sun sets. The roads must always be well-lit so people feel secure leaving their homes in the evening. It can be achieved by simply installing solar street lights. Hence, we at Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India), a well-known NGO in India, collaborated with businesses under their CSR projects to install solar street lights across Indian villages.

The project has already benefited thousands of people living in villages.
