How School Renovation Projects Can Help Shape the Future of Rural Education

Step into a government school in any rural or backward region of India, and the multiple issues these schools deal with every single day will immediately grab your attention. Cracked walls, unhygienic toilets, insufficient desks and tables, and poor lighting are some of the very common problems hampering the rural education scenario. These physical conditions have created unsafe and unreliable learning environments, compromising rural children’s education journey.

When our team visited such schools across India, we realised how urgently they needed renovation to support children’s education in rural regions. It’s why we at Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India), highly trusted as the top NGO in India, created Project Vidhya, one of our flagship social projects aimed at improving access to quality education for people from marginalised and backward regions.

This project is carried out in collaboration with several leading organisations as part of their CSR initiatives. If you’re keen to learn more about this project and how even small school renovations can shape the future of rural education, read the full blog post below.

The Ground Reality: Infrastructure Challenges Holding Rural Education Back

Across several rural government schools in India, inadequate infrastructure continues to undermine educational outcomes. Many schools face an acute lack of –

  • Proper ventilation facilities inside classrooms
  • Gender-segregated bathrooms
  • Decent lighting
  • Quality furniture
  • Well-stocked library
  • Digital laboratories
  • Clean drinking water installation and more

Even the school buildings are not in good condition and have lost their structural integrity over the years. Collectively, these challenges have created an unreliable learning environment in which students don’t feel motivated to continue their learning journey.

If schools don’t address these problems early, it will lead to higher absenteeism, increased dropout rates, and widening education disparities between urban and rural student communities.

Fixing the Key Challenges Through School Renovation Projects

Our team at Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India) visited multiple schools in rural regions across the country, and after thorough inspections, we concluded that school renovation projects can effectively address all the aforementioned challenges. Hence, we undertook the responsibility of repairing unsafe school infrastructure and modernising the same to support quality education in villages.

The school renovation projects, thereby conducted, helped create safe and dignified learning spaces for students, especially for adolescent girls. Renovated schools have already begun to witness improved student attendance and retention. Even teachers feel motivated and supported through school renovation, which leads to improved teaching and learning outcomes.

We’ve already renovated several schools in Rajasthan’s Barmer district and Jammu & Kashmir’s Baramulla district, and improvements in overall education quality and student attendance are already visible.

Project Vidhya: Renovating One School at a Time

As one of the top NGO in Rajasthan, when we at Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India) launched Project Vidhya, our key aim was to improve and support the infrastructure and resource needs of rural government schools. Hence, the schools we undertook for renovation have not only been repaired and modernised in terms of infrastructure, but we also took the responsibility of encouraging healthy behaviours, strengthening community engagement, and empowering girls through menstrual hygiene management workshops to ensure maximum impact.

We genuinely believe these efforts will create healthy learning environments for students, leading to improved school attendance, learning experiences, and academic outcomes. Here’s a quick glimpse of the key efforts we’re making under Project Vidhya to bring about significant changes in the rural education scenario of India –

  • Constructing new classrooms and gender-segregated toilets
  • Repairing/renovating existing school buildings
  • Constructing rainwater harvesting structures for water conservation
  • Installing handwashing stations with adequate soap & water supply
  • Providing desk furniture for students
  • Installing smart touch panels, solar lighting, and RO+ water cooler units
  • Setting up IT labs with office computers and printers
  • Distributing basic medical kits and nutritional kits

These are a few of our efforts, and we’re expanding our offerings based on the school’s precise requirements.

The Mechanism Powering Project Vidhya

For something to be truly impactful, it has to be done in a structured and thoughtful manner. Hence, we’ve made extra efforts to ensure systematic design and implementation for this project.

The following steps will give you an idea of how Project Vidhya is working to positively impact the lives of thousands of rural children:

  • Our team collaborates with the local education department to conduct assessment surveys in select government schools.
  • We then identify gaps in the school’s infrastructure, sanitation, digital tools, and health facilities.
  • A school-wide development plan is created, and interventions are prioritised based on urgency, feasibility, and available resources.
  • We proceed with the repair/renovation work and start providing the required equipment.
  • Capacity building and awareness programs are also organised for both students and teachers to promote eco-friendly and healthy practices.

Once the school renovation project is finished, we don’t abandon them. Our team at Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India) conducts regular site visits and progress reviews to ensure the school’s operations are running smoothly. Monthly/quarterly reporting arrangements are also made for our collaborating partners.

To make school renovation feasible on a broader scale, we at Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India) collaborated with numerous Indian organisations, including National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), RAILTEL, and IRCON International Limited. As part of this collaboration, we installed sanitary pad vending machines in government schools, including incinerators, in Rajasthan’s Barmer district. These installations have significantly benefited adolescent girls by helping to improve their attendance and overall academic performance.

Conclusion

When it comes to education, people usually place importance on the curriculum, pedagogy, teaching staff, etc. While they’re all important, so is the learning environment. Even the most capable students can experience setbacks in their learning journey if the school environment is not conducive enough.

Hence, we at Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India), the top NGO in Rajasthan, initiated Project Vidhya with the core motto of improving the lives and futures of rural children through the betterment of the infrastructure of government schools in select underdeveloped regions. Through Project Vidhya, we’re not just renovating school buildings and classrooms but also providing adequate resources to support smooth learning experiences.
