CSR Implementation

Overview

India is home to thousands of companies that contribute to the country’s economic growth. Among them, a sizable number of corporations are legally obligated to carry out CSR activities under the Companies Act, 2013. While most large companies are well-equipped to plan and execute CSR activities with their in-house teams, the results are not always what they expect.

At Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India), an ISO 9001:2015 Certified NGO in Jaipur and a highly trusted CSR implementation agency, we’ve been working with various well-known companies, including Asian Paints, HDFC Bank, Indian Oil, and several others, for the past 25 years. Our experience in the arena has helped us identify why well-intentioned and well-funded efforts alone don’t translate into meaningful outcomes. We have closely seen that what most companies need to ensure the success of their CSR projects is smooth collaboration with people who have strong grassroots-level experience working in the particular social domain.

If you’re wondering how collaboration can influence your CSR project’s impact, you must read the full blog post.

The Gap Between Intent and On-Ground Reality

Unlike corporate projects, CSR initiatives don’t operate in controlled environments. They unfold in communities shaped by local priorities, social dynamics, and long-standing challenges.

Some companies make the mistake of believing that understanding these realities is a one-time exercise. However, the fact is that it demands consistent presence and engagement at the ground level. When this layer is missing, even well-planned initiatives can misfire.

What happens then is that even though a program may address a visible issue, it tends to overlook what the community actually needs and prioritises. Similarly, an organisation may initiate skill programs for the benefit of women or rural communities, but they might not align with local economic opportunities.

These outcomes are not failures of intent but gaps in interpretation. All these aspects point to a single realisation – effective CSR depends as much on understanding as it does on execution.

NGOs Bring Along Ground-Level Experience

When companies collaborate with NGOs or CSR implementation agencies, the latter bring along the right experience to the table to ensure the success of CSR projects. Since these organisations hold years of experience working with the local population at the grassroots level, they understand their needs better than most.

They also enjoy high trust from local communities, which makes it easier to secure their acceptance of CSR projects. For companies, this collaboration changes how CSR is approached. Instead of building everything from scratch, they can work with partners who already understand what works, what doesn’t, and why.

Here’s How Collaboration Leads to Successful CSR Implementation

Let’s understand why collaboration leads to stronger CSR implementation and outcomes through the following points.

  • Anchors CSR in real needs, not assumptions

One of the most common gaps in independent CSR is misalignment. Without deep local insight, initiatives may address what appears urgent rather than what is actually needed. A CSR implementation partner will help you ground decisions in reality, ensuring relevance from the start.

  • Prevents inefficiencies that come with learning on the go

Building CSR programs internally often involves a learning curve. This curve usually involves understanding local communities, establishing processes, and adapting execution models. This takes a lot of time and resources. Collaboration with the right partner can reduce this friction by bringing in established systems and experience.

  • Strengthens community participation

CSR outcomes are closely tied to how communities respond to them. Trust plays a significant role here. NGOs like Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India), with their existing relationships with locals, bridge this gap, making initiatives more acceptable, participatory, and sustainable.

Project Aarogyya: A Result of Effective Collaboration Between Companies & NGOs

Many ideas sound good on paper but fail to deliver the desired impact in real-world settings. To ensure it doesn’t happen to CSR projects, we at Manav Vikas Sanstha (MVS India), one among the top 10 NGOs in Jaipur, work closely with organisations to design, implement, and measure the project’s impact from start to end. Project Aarogyya is a proud result of one such collaboration.

Project Aarogyya is a CSR initiative aimed at improving the overall access to quality healthcare services in rural and underserved regions, so that people from financially weaker sections can receive high-quality healthcare services. As a part of the project, we’ve installed multiple health ATM machines in several Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Community Health Centres (CHCs) across the country.

For this project, we collaborated with multiple companies, including KONICA MINOLTA, IRCON International Limited, ECGC Limited, and BRN Infrastructures Private Limited, to align on their shared CSR goal of improving access to quality healthcare services in rural and underserved regions.

It led to the installation of 57 health ATM machines across primary and community health centres in remote districts of Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, Gujarat, Sikkim, Mizoram, Punjab, Goa, and multiple other Indian states. Our team is still working to expand this installation across all Indian states and union territories.

How Project Aarogyya Benefitted Rural Communities?

The ATM machines installed under Project Aarogyya can be used as diagnostic kiosks that read an individual’s health condition against 50+ parameters. Some of these parameters include body fat analysis, anaemia, lipid profile, NI blood pressure, and diabetes. Trained individuals and healthcare professionals handle these ATMs to ensure proper usage.

As a result of these ATM installations, rural communities have benefited both economically and health-wise. Since these ATM machines offer free diagnosis, people can monitor their health more frequently, helping them identify diseases at an early stage. Besides improving people’s health, this initiative has also strengthened community trust in the public healthcare systems.
